BANGER/BOURÁK is a dark comedy about serious things, plus a bit of a gangster movie, jam-
packed with great music and cynical humour, in which absurd situations are interspersed with
romantic scenes, and rock and roll hits with slow love ballads.

The story takes place in Šlukdorf, an imaginary township in North Bohemia, where the only viable businesses are gambling places, casinos and whores. Kamila (Veronika Marková), an 18-year old girl who’s fed up to her back teeth with the deadbeat town, is working in such a non-stop one arm bandits establishment. Her family is no help either. Her tired mum (Kristýna Boková) earns all the money and is pretending not to see what her husband is doing. That husband is called BANGER (Ivan Trojan) by everyone and is a fifty year old fixer of wrecked cars having a late puberty attack. He somehow gets a battered pink Cadillac and frequents rock and roll dancing parties with a girl who looks like she’s walked straight out of a lingerie catalogue from 1950s America. And, as if that was not enough, Kamila’s boss (Jiří Macháček), a local gangster, who’s evidently lost his marbles, is in love with her mother.  In the end Kamila finally realises that it is her who has to take action and make her mother step on her father’s pointy shoes! Otherwise the rest is history.

Banger’s screenplay was written by Petr Jarchovský and he managed to transform a social drama story to an off the wall dark comedy about a grown-up daughter who decides to save her somewhat less grown-up parents’ marriage before the whole family goes down. „I think that we live in strange times these days, we were and still are locked within our own private bubbles, and it shows how important one’s family is in such moments when everything goes pear-shape. And that however imperfect that family might be, it makes perfect sense to fight for it, because all crises are easier to overcome in a family,“ says Ondřej Trojan, the director and producer, about the unexpected message if his fifth feature film.
